We have had a bit of action recently with small black tip and green spot kingfish and the usual three spot pompanos. This has been at Mission Rocks and also off the point on a spring low at Vidal. At the point at Vidal on the spring low one can fish off the outer reefs. Fish have been taken on both fly and spoon.

Currently, the sea is unusually warm for this time of year at 23-24°C. What is strange is that the boats took a number of queen mackerel which normally only arrive at the end of May with the cooler water. These fish have disappeared again which leads us to believe that they might have followed a cool current which came in with a recent cyclone.

The lake has dropped again but not by much as we have had some good rain and the Umfolozi has been diverted into the estuary through a large pipe while they dig a permanent canal to link the river to the estuary on a permanent basis. This is a three-year project but they appear to be making good progress. When complete it is hoped that the lake will be open to the sea for most of the year.
