Description of issue:

The Mabola Protected Environment which is situated between Volksrust and Piet Retief was declared 10 months ago. On 16/09/2014 a powerful and well connected mining company, Atha-Africa Ventures, was issued a licence to coal mine within the PE. It is alleged that the issue of this licence was not subject to due legal process and in fact it appears that the mine will operate in a wetland which in itself is a criminal offence. It is also alleged that the company is exerting extreme pressure on state and provincial officials to have part of the PE deproclaimed so they can proceed. It is likely that the leading environmental NGO's will challenge the issue of the licence in court.
