FOSAF FLYFISHING REPORTS - Saltwater - North Coast

Date of Report: Thursday, 12th August 2010
Name: Jeff Asher-Wood

I have spent some time in the last week at Vidal with Bruce Black and we had some of the worst weather this year as the cold front moved through with waves as high as 5 metres and water temperature down to 17 C whereas it should be closer to 20 C. Prior to the cold front there were some shad both at Vidal and the bay at St Lucia but the catches were quite sporadic. With the cold water even the 3 spot pompano are scarce. August is not a good month for us as it is usually too windy and if it is like last year we do not expect an improvement until November when the water reaches 25 C and the kingies arrive in numbers.

The ski boats are also battling and the lake at St Lucia is dropping again with salinity levels on the increase. Although we have had plenty of rain it has all been coastal whereas the catchment for the lake is very dry.

Till the next fish

Cheers Jeff
