For our club, the Eastern Province Freshwater Fish Conservancy, the Sand River Dam which is about 30 hectares now proving our most successful trout water since the wall of the Moffat Dam broke several years ago. Unfortunately it does not appear as if the Moffat Dam wall will be repaired any time in the near future as the estimated cost keeps rising.

Although the Sand River Dam contains largemouth bass the trout stockings of the last couple of years are paying off and since this last winter a good number of trout, all in good condition, have been recorded which is very encouraging. This has also meant that we are trying to wean our spin-anglers off spin fishing and we are holding fly casting clinics to do this. Our aim is to obviate the damage done by spinners and all new members are required to be proficient fly casters.

The Sand River Dam like all the waters in the PE area is slightly acid but at a PH of 6,5 it is still well suited to trout. The club re-stocked the dam 2 weeks ago with 883 yearlings of 15 - 20 cm. These were collected by the club from Rhodes University and transported to the dam. This recent stocking should ensure that the good fly fishing continues for the next year.

The club will have a outing to the popular Thrift Dam over the August long weekend when 14 members travel up to the Winterberg. The 3 cottages have been booked for them.

Note that the club AGM will be held at the German Club on 12th August. For more information on the Association contact Brian Clarke at 041-9957744 (office) or 082 5373285
